Following the success of last year’s one-off Zenith watches old models gold Replica Pilot Type 20 Extra Special, which was created to celebrate our 15th anniversary, this year WorldTempus is offering a new Zenith Pilot as part of its latest “unique pieces” operation. In shades of blue, with a smaller 40 mm diameter case, this watch belongs to the brand-new Pilot Type 20 Extra Special collection unveiled at this year’s Baselworld, and it looks equally good on a man’s or a woman’s wrist.
Pilots’ watches are big this year, and vintage styling represents an additional attraction for historically-inspired timepieces associated with the heroes of aviation and their conquest of the skies. The one-off Pilot Type 20 Extra Special 40 mm offered by WorldTempus marries technical modernity with a vintage spirit. It has many features inspired by old Zenith watches ultra thin Replica aviators’ watches: oversized Arabic numerals and faceted hands coated with vintage beige SuperLuminova, easily readable against the fine-grained dial, along with a generous fluted crown and contrasting overstitching on the strap. To complement these historical features, Zenith has opted for an aged steel case (water resistant to 100 m) topped with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a closed caseback engraved with the date Zenith was founded (1865) and the Le Locle manufacture’s period logo of the starred shield. A keen eye will spot the exclusive detail that makes this watch a one-off: the figure 16 at 12 o’clock.

The mechanical heart of the watch is nevertheless unapologetically modern. It beats at the 28,800 vph cadence of the Elite 679 automatic calibre, which provides a 50-hour power reserve for the hours, minutes and seconds functions. The rotor is decorated with Geneva striping. The soft blue nubuck strap is lined with rubber and enhanced with bold white topstitching..
The Pilot Type 20 Extra Special 40 mm unique piece is for sale exclusively from WorldTempus for the price of CHF 5,900.

The diameter is, of course, not the only metric we pay attention to. We greatly prefer thin watches at Timeless, to the point that we often find ourselves using manual wind movements over automatics. Of course, there’s no way we’d skip using the El Primero, so that wasn’t a viable option, yet it is a testament to the engineering of a movement from 1969 that the watch only had to be 13.75mm thick. That’s hardly an ultra-thin, but in an era when even ordinary three hand watches are frequently 14mm or more, it remains impressive. The El Primero movement is, by far, the biggest change to the A273 source material. The A273, wonderful as it was, was powered by a more common, from a technical standpoint, manually wound movement. The El Primero, conversely, is not just a good movement, it’s a true legend. It is easily among the two best known chronograph movements in the world, the other being the highly respected, although less prestigious, 7750. There are many reasons that the El Primero has stood the test of time where so few other movements have. The first is the feature by which it derives its name, specifically that it’s the first automatic chronograph.
